Against The Grain – primitive furniture and design

We are a sustainable furniture company
based in Portland, Oregon.

Reclaimed and vintage fir, spruce,
pine, and redwood, comprise the bulk
of the materials we use. Our furniture
is a testament to the history
and the wonder of REALLY OLD trees.

Our designs are sometimes primitive
art furniture in style, while other times
country–style, French country, Farmhouse, Shaker, Quaker, Hand-Crafted, and well, simple. We CUSTOM build each piece and no two are ever identical. But ALWAYS our furniture is rich with history, texture and warmth.

In finishing our products, we use earth-friendly waxes, oils, paints, and permanent finishes. Although many people call our furniture ‘green’ and ‘environmentally sound’ we prefer to think that using old wood to make new heirlooms is just the right thing to do.
